The "cry it out" approach - Now this will likely not appeal to the soft hearted parent! It requires leaving your baby to cry for a pre-arranged amount of time before going in to attend to him. As time goes on, little by little increase the time frame between visits. Tough love without a doubt, but it works! In time baby will realize that his crying isn't achieving anything so he gives up and goes to sleep.
I understand the above won't appeal to everyone. But in the long term you will be teaching your baby to self soothe.
Set up a sleep routine - It doesn't need to be difficult. A bath followed by a cuddle and a quick bedtime story will do the trick. You should not include stimulating activities like games into the routine and do everything exactly the same and at the same time every night.
